While occasional and mild panic attacks can often be self treated with relaxation techniques and other alternative therapies, severe panic attacks, which may be a sign of a larger anxiety disorder, often require medical attention. In these cases, conventional treatments, including both prescribed medication and psychotherapy, may be warranted.

Occasional panic attacks can be very unnerving and bothersome, but when the symptoms of these episodes are so severe that they begin to interfere with a person’s ability to function and meet everyday responsibilities, it may be time to consider medical attention. Conventional treatment for panic attacks usually involves a two-pronged approach: medication to help ease and reduce the severity of the symptoms, and therapy to try and address the underlying cause of the anxiety.

Medication for Panic Attacks

After a person experiences an initial panic attack, the fear of having another episode can become so profound that it interferes with his or her ability to function normally and to meet everyday responsibilities. In this state of constant anxiety, it becomes almost inevitable that a subsequent panic attack will occur. Medication can help to lessen the effects of this anxiety and bring relief to the panic attack sufferer.

The medication available for panic attacks has come a long way in recent years and when combined with behavioral therapy or psychotherapy, these drugs can be a very effective component in an overall treatment strategy. While this medication is not a cure, it can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of the symptoms.

The following is a brief description of the two most commonly prescribed medicines for panic and anxiety disorder:

* SSRI Antidepressants. SSRIs, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, are by far the most commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of panic attacks. Many doctors believe that panic and anxiety may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, specifically involving the neurotransmitter serotonin. The medicines used to counteract this – including amongst others, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor – can help restore that balance and bring long-term relief from panic and anxiety related symptoms.

* Benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are fast-acting medicines used primarily for the treatment of anxiety and panic disorder. The medication in this class of drugs – including such names as Valium, Xanax, Ativan and Klonopin – can be especially helpful in reducing panic attack symptoms as they are occurring. These medicines should be used with extreme caution, however, as they can be extremely addictive.

Psychotherapy

Usually, medication is not wholly sufficient to keep panic attacks from recurring, which is why it is often combined with therapy. Psychotherapy, often called talk therapy, is a process in which the panic attack sufferer sits down with a licensed professional to help work through the underlying factors which may be causing the anxiety. Once a possible cause is identified, this therapy can help provide healthier solutions for dealing with the stressor(s).

When panic attacks are severe enough that they limit a person’s ability to function normally, it may be time to seek medical attention. Conventional treatment for panic attacks, including medication and psychotherapy, is the preferred treatment method of most doctors and mental health professionals.

The Power of Medication Regimen – Cure Anxiety and Panic Attack

Anxiety or panic attack is not only a product of psychological or social distress. Scientists have found out that there is a significant connection between panic behavior and the level of the neurotransmitter GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid). This is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It functions as the body’s natural anti-anxiety agent by diminishing cell stability, thus reducing the rate of neuronal firing. It can be found in one third of the nerves and the locus ceruleus where norepinephrine exerts cellular function. Thus, GABA levels are low or there is an imbalance between GABA and norepinephrine. In order to cure anxiety and panic attack, GABA levels have to increase or its receptors be made available for proper functioning.

The drugs responsible for the control and management of anxiety and panic attacks belong to the Benzodiazepine group. Benzodiazepines bind to a specific site on the GABA receptors, thus making the receptors more sensitive to the neurotransmitter. This mediation by the Benzodiazepines allows more GABA to counteract the stimulating effects of norepinephrine. Examples of this group of dugs are Alprazolam (Xanax), Chlordiazepoxide (Librium), Clonazepam(Klonopin), Chlorazepate (Tranxene), Diazepam (Valium), Flunazepam (Dalmane), Lorazepam (Ativan), Oxazepam (serax), Temazepam (Restoril) and Triazolam (Halcion). These drugs have varying half-lives which means some have faster calming effects than the others. Despite their high soothing effect, Benzodiazapine has a tendency to cause physical dependence. Once the drug is discontinued abruptly, patients may experience symptoms resembling the original symptoms for which the client has sought treatment. As such, doses must be tapered. Aside from this, benzodiazepines are associated with Central Nervous System depression like light headedness, sedation, clouded sensorium, impaired memory and poor coordination. Safety must be ensured when taking these drugs so injuries will not happen. Moreover, alcohol should never be taken along with it since benzodiazepines potentiate the effects of alcohol.

Another kind of drug to cure anxiety and panic attack is Buspiranone (Buspar). This works by acting as a partial agonist in serotonin receptors, thus decreasing serotonin turn-over. Serotonin is another stimulating neurotransmitter that can escalate anxiety or turn stressful situations into anxiety provoking ones. However, this drug acts very slowly compared to the Benzodiazepines. The common side effects include dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, sedation and nausea. To ensure safety, patients taking the drug must never engage in activities requiring attention like driving or going to work.

Aside from medication therapy, psychotherapy or counseling is also important to cure anxiety and panic attack. Patients must be educated on the nature of their disease conditions as well as on the possible means on how they can handle it properly. Moreover, patients must be allowed to verbalize their fears, insecurities or any other feeling that may induce anxiety or panic attacks. Family members or close friends must also be involved so that they may not contribute to the suffering of the patient. As significant others, they can be of help in ensuring safety once the attack has happened again. With all these efforts, it is possible to cure anxiety and panic attack.
